Who was St Therese of Lisieux?
St Therese was the youngest of nine children in her family. She had many sad times in her childhood because only four of her sisters lived to become adults and her mother also died when Therese was only four years old. Her father and her big sisters loved her very much and called her "little princess".When she was only 15 years old, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She called herself "Sister Therese of the Child Jesus" and tried very hard to show love for other people and creation through everything she did.
Therese was often very sick so she spent a lot of time praying quietly by herself. She wrote letters, books, poems and prayers about God and her ideas about how to live a holy life.
St Therese believed that people don't need to do big or amazing things to do good in our world. She believed that the little acts of kindness we do our the most important way to show God that we care. She called her way of living "the Little Way".
St Therese loved nature, especially flowers. She noticed that there are many different kinds of flowers and that they are all special to God - just like all people are different but each of us is special to God.
